MY Alicia launched by SMS in Southampton
The SMS Group was established via a series of acquisitions. The original company was founded over 12 years ago and throughout these years it has been involved in a huge range of very exciting, yet challenging projects. Each project is different and could be anything from the design, build or repairing of a wide range of different tugs, workboats, pontoons, barges, vessels, ferries and luxury yachts. The team at SMS work closely with each of their customers, getting a great understanding of each requirement. The latest multi-million pound project that SMS have been a part of since 2015 is a spacious 50m yacht restoration. She was built in 1930 by Defoe Shipbuilding based in Michigan, United States of America. The classic, now British yacht, began her life known as MY Janidore (latterly ex RS Eden) and after the redesign of the exterior and interior to give it a stunningly traditional look she is now recognised as MY Alicia.
Other notable projects include Lord Sugar’s stylish superyacht named MY Lady A, she is a 55m yacht that SMS worked on in 2016 for a 10 month refit. The structural, mechanical and electrical aspects of the yacht were modified, as well giving it a light grey hull for a sleek and sporty look.
MY Shemara is a 65m yacht that was built in 1938 at JL Thornycroft’s yard in Southampton, she has a huge amount of history behind her. She came in to SMS for a refit in 2010 after being towed into Portsmouth and four years later she was ready to be lowered back into the sea.
Director, Paul Hollowell and the team at WRS have worked very closely with SMS for over 5 years and have helped provide permanent and contract employees for many of their projects. WRS and SMS, throughout each project, have worked alongside each other in harmony to achieve some remarkable results.
WRS have had a significant amount of subcontractors working on MY Alicia across a variety of trades. At WRS all contractors are looked after and are spoken to on a weekly basis building up a good relationship with them so that their needs are fully understood; moreover WRS prides itself in working in a true and genuine partnership with SMS. Paul comments “working with the SMS team is a genuine delight; they’re good people doing a really good job and it’s an honour to be a small part of some of their amazing projects”.
MY Alicia was last week launched and is now nearing completion - it is an exciting time for all those involved as the refit of the elegant yacht is coming to an end. After the launch MY Alicia will be ready to explore the seas again after three long years. Being involved in such an impressive project has been so rewarding for WRS and we are excited to see what future projects will entail. We wish SMS the very greatest success.
