WRS Tech recruits for technical professionals involved in marine design, shipbuilding, shipping and seagoing activities.
Our day to day activities revolve around our reliance on various forms of IT to communicate and share information with our clients and candidates around the world.
Equally the professionals that we deal with, whether our clients or the people we place, depend on their IT infrastructure to support the work they are doing in their day to day jobs.
Earlier this week a good client of WRS Tech was the victim of a Ransomware attack on their IT infrastructure. WRS Tech’s Client is a multisite multinational ship design consultancy who utilize their IT systems to share drawings and technical information between project team members and their end clients.
The Ransomware attack fully crippled all four of WRS Tech’s client’s offices and their entire contingent of engineers was unable to produce any work for the three days it has taken to resolve as the attack was particularly malicious and had corrupted the backups as well.
Despite being a major cost and inconvenience directly to the technical team the commercial team was also majorly disrupted by their inability to conduct business with their clients.
I had a long discussion with one of the senior directors of the affected companies and I have put in place steps to protect WRS Tech’s own system as a result.
I am as far from a IT expert as it is possible to be but from my experiences this week apparently ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly common and I would encourage all of my contacts on LinkedIn to look into putting measures in place to protect their own IT Infrastructures and speaking to a proper security expert.
A significant portion of WRS Tech’s client base are involved in Fleet Management and Marine Operations who typically hold a large amount of data relating to the safe operation of Seagoing assets. It could seriously compromise the safety of a crew if the shore based team supporting them were unable to access the data they require during an incident if they are under attack of a Ransomware attack.
If you would like to discuss either a new opportunity in a marine design, shipbuilding, shipping or seagoing position or are looking recruit a new member of staff or contractor please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the team at WRS Tech www.wrstech.co.uk
We are unable to offer support on either ransomware attacks or IT support.
